HAPPY NEW YEAR to everyone

Not sure if anyone reads this still but i thought i would write anyway.
Today i am celebrating 8 months of marriage Yes Peter and I got married on May 21st 2011.
Also i cant believe its 2012 already and i am still sharing about my experience in Kenya, it is also great that i am in touch with my 'family' out there still to this day, thanks to email and mainly Facebook also mobile contact. 4 years later of being back.

Wow how God has challenged us both especially these last 8 months - we have moved churches and is now waiting to see what God has in store for us this year.

Wow what can I say 2 years on and im still sharing my Kenyan experience tomorrow im in a place called Ashley in Staffordshire sharing part of my experience within their service quite nervous but it wil be ok - Gods in control

Im still recovering at present and needto have another 4 weeks off work :( but at least im hoping this is it.

Peter and I have nearly sorted out our wedding plans weve brought the fabric and material for the dresses!!

Yesterday i had an operation on my right knee and so at present im in plaster and on crutches but the lord is healing it well as the pain is easing but this is day 2!!

Jambo all
Im still in the UK and also my heart is still with my 'family' and friends in Kenya i am still working at the private school nursery in Newcastle-under-lyme with the 2-3 year olds, church life is manic but still uplifting even through the moans and groans of many
Family is expanding again.
At present im praying for the Mubichi family in Kenya as they are grieving over the lost of Florence (wife,mum,grandmother,) whose funeral takes place on Tuesday in Kenya my prayers and thoghts go with them.

I hope all those who read this had a peaceful christmas and are looking forward to seeing what our Lord Jesus has instore for us all in 2010.
I have a week left until i start work at a private nursery only 17 months later of being home from Kenya, this year has been a very challenging one and a struggle but also a blessed one cause the Lord has looked after me along with friends and Family who i thank so much for all their support prayers and love, to help me through this last year.

Hi everyone
still unemployed but had an interview today so fingers crossed that i hear something back from it. think it went ok but who knows only the Lord
Thankfully I have the Lord and great friends and family for support a shoulder to cry on, listening ears and helping me out thanks everyone.
Im still living in staffordshire in my 1 bed flat its great.
Still praying for direction but still praying loads that i can go cliff college soon to study, but for the time being ill stick with newcastle college and do my 2 evening courses Maths and ECDL level2 (computers).
Off to see family and friends tomorrow for a long weekend cant wait its been awhile
Then going to see a family i havent seen since my leaving party for kenya to show them the photos so still at it sharing my experiences and stories CANT WAIT should be ACE also a catch up!!

Hi everyone,
I do hope people are still reading this
Nothing has really changed since july post regarding work as i still do not have a job and its really getting to me now. I NEED TO WORK FULL TIME
Within Church im still a bb officer, occassional guider at rainbows helper at brownies, steward, church council member, i run the multimedia, play in the music group, im now also the event co-ordiantor if people want to hire the halls they call me up all these cause noone else would take them on - I really do enjoy doing all this otherwise i wouldnt do it plus its mainly for the Lord and thats what discipleship is all about helping others aswell as leading them to Him.
Im still missing Kenya lots but greatful for facebook as i can keep in touch with some of them.
I am starting 2 evening courses at college redoing my mathematics aswell as a ECDL level 2 computer course looking forward to that.
Lots of prayer is needed for my future as i am looking into a course for youth ministry/ youth work at Cliff but needs prayer especially financal prayer aswell but in Gods timing all this will happen. So watch this space.

Hi all
Had a great few months still sharing my Kenyan experience at several different meetings - amazing really a year and abit of being home and still sharing at least that and the Church and my family are keeping me busy with little voluntary jobs.
STILL STILL JOB HUNTING I NEED A FULLTIME JOB - willing to do anything which doesnt involve driving around i can get to places on a bus but I DONT DRIVE and i cant afford too - its really getting to me now.
Hey ho like everyone else in the same boat. PLUS i cant sign up with agency because its whenever and i need permanent full time to live.
I wish sometimes i was still out in Kenya.

Not sure if anyone still reads this blog, but if they do thanks
Wow been back nearly a year now cant believe where this year has gone, and what ive done in this year, mainly alot of voluntary work through talks on kenya, church stuff and mainly job hunting. ON monday i had an operation on my left ear drum as ive had a hole in since i was a baby, so now they have decided to operated on it - go back on june 10th for follow up on it.
So im recovering from it and actually feel pretty ok. I wasnt that much sick either just arms and legs flying everywhere and took off the bandage for them to replace opps!!
Oh well thats it really. Nothing else really to report. STILL JOB HUNTING THOUGH doing my head in abit but being kept busy which is the main thing.

Thanks for everyone who supported our district even with the Methodist President, the event went really great lots of people came and at least 180 people stayed for the sit down meal. Thanks for the help and support from my circuit Rev Jenny,Alex,Mary and especially Helen (who printed off my photos and didn't mind her email full of them also for helping on the day as well couldn't of done it with out you). i hope Ive not forgotten anyone.
For all those who came what an experience we had from the different countries and cultures
My congratulations goes out to all those who organised and arranged for it to happen so smoothly enjoyed the day although yes i was warn out with all the talking and sharing, but great experience.

Hello Everyone
Wow where did 2008 go? I’m sorry where did these last 7 months go? I can’t believe I’ve been home over half a year now from my year out in Kenya – did it go this fast last year??!!
As I reflect on my last 7 months I’m going to be honest about the way I’ve been feeling because as you know Joanne is fine no matter what, but you have to say that out in Kenya anyway, so I fitted in well!!
These past few months have been really hard for me and I believe that I’ve suffered reverse cultural shock (I was aware of this from my training that it may happen), this happened until about November - so good news I feel settled. Although a huge thank you to all those who have been there for me, listened to my concerns, a shoulder to cry on, shared in my experience of Kenya and basically helped me back into the way of living here and just for being you.
I know because I couldn’t settle, unsure of where I was meant to be, didn’t know what I’m meant to be doing (that really still applies), I didn’t know where I was with my faith (strange I know after a whole year of doing Gods calling) but reading His Word; through prayers; listening to music and in services also through many conversations with many of you; I believe that my spark is slowly returning to a flame. But as Joanne always does just get on with things, catch up with friends and family as I’ve not seen them for over a year – probably some people I’ve not even seen yet since I got back – sorry .
Personally if I can deal with much more challenging circumstances in Kenya (Country elections, the church problems, and the situation at the home, also suffering with Malaria) I can deal with personal changes here. On The Experience Exchange Programme reflection weekend back in October 2008 was ace, my eyes were open my heart was strengthened to know that I wasn’t alone in the boat and these feelings through sharing with the other EEPs and we all said with the help of our Lord and family friends and the help from EEPs staff we all got through our experiences.

To end I would like to share a song written by one of the children Ann Joy from the Children’s Home Meru Kenya:

Ok so its nearly mid jan hey ho!!
another update for u im now not working yet again it finished at christmas so job hunting yet again alongside everyone else not happy
Also im now renting a property in porthill newcastle-under-lyme staffs, a lovely 1 bedroom flat which used to be a post office so im told.
Life is settling now and getting into some sort of normality i think.
Still doing a few talks on my experience in kenya which is great as it keeps it alive and its great to share with one another.

So happy new year 2009 is here and im praying that u are all ok and that we are listening to God about what he wants us to do.

well hello to anyone who still is reading this, now im back in uk it feels a tad wired still writing on it but it updates you all with what im up to especially those who i dont manage to see regularly.

Well 5 months now ive been back and Praise God things are now starting to be on the way up!!

Ive started a 10 hour job with a company down london but can do from up stoke plus monday 17th november i should be starting a part time job at Iceland supermarket retail experience which i do have.
then we shall see after christmas - start looking again.
Still living at my sisters in wolstanton but have put housing application in so we shall see, or maybe moving in with my dad that bit still unsure of.
I cant believe its 5 months and im still speaking about Kenya then again i will be for the rest of my life it was a whole year experience not everyone yet has seen the photos will honestly get round to it soon promise.

Since ive been back ive been abit up and down not knowing what meant to be doing, where im meant to be, who i am so i feel yes that ive suffered cultural shock quite bad really also with changes in my personal life not really helped but overcoming them now. If im honest some of those questions still havent been answered.
I have done various of talks, been on reflection,a few job turn downs,church life occassionally helped at rainbows, brownies,bb,church services,playing in music group, so really in away bck to the way i was bfore kenya although not 100% committed, but in a way this has helped me to settle back in some aspect.

I pray about them aswell as speak to friends / minister about it 1 friend said to me the other day "cant believe that its easier to adapt to another country than adapting back to your own especially in finding work" have to agree, plus the time of year the credit crunch wrong timing really oh well life goes on.

Just getting prepared for a reflection weekend in Birmingham cant wait im looking forward sharing my experience on kenya with others aswell as meeting those and others i trained with.

Other update is that the job i mentioned in my other blog post nothing has become of it as in the end and waiting 3 months being told there was no Fulltime position (bomb shell) i was looking forward in starting but with all the hassle it has caused im not sure. But i do have an interview later on today and a job training in london which i can do from stoke (home) so we shall see.

Now living at my sisters house in Wolstanton, still very busy with various of talks and sharing photoes - some still not seen.
But aswell as all whats been happening since ive come back i now can say things are getting settled and i now start work which ive been waiting for my crb to come through at last its arrived. Hoping to start next Monday with creative support.
I had a fab time in Jersey the island is beautiful i didnt want to come home i will be returning there for holidays. Thanks Christine and all i met for making me feel so welcome.

Im in need of some time out since ive been back in the uk its been atad manic with moving house meeting up with friends and family which has been great!! Getting back into worship and sharing kenya at various of services and meetings aswell as photoes with friends and family.
Ive been invoted over to jersey tomorrow to see Rev Christine Legge who ive not seen since before Kenya so im looking forward to it aswell as time out and more time with God reflecting and exploring his beauty aswell as exploring jersey.

Im still awaiting a start date from my job CRB how long do they take???
So i thought id take some holiday before i started.

I cant believe where these 3 months have gone so fast with lots happening with moving house, now have been offered a job but waiting to hear on a start date once all the checks have been cleared.
Ive been around 3 churches doing services 2 more to go in my circuit and 3 more on talks to share my experiences out in Kenya as its so fresh in my mind. more to come my diary is getting full luckily im hoping it will fit in with my new hours.
If not rearrange them not a problem.

Finding it a tad easier now back here but it has taken me a while to settle im still not 100% settled with everything going on.
I had a great time in Bath seeing family and friends, since then a friend has been up from Bath so that was great to spend some time together.
Now its to finalising packing boxes oh so much fun!!

At present im job hunting - not going great at present - anyone in staffordshire hear of anything and have my number please let me know ta.
well 2 months back finding it ok but tad harder than i thought as lots of situations have gone on while ive been away. But that life and also with the strength of the Lord we will get through it. Aswell as moving house locally to where i am living now.

On Friday and Saturday had a great time at Adoration in trentham gardens great Christian bands / choirs and fantastic schools choir of all ages despite the weather.

Looking forward on visiting grandparents and friends this week in Bath who ive not yet seen since ive been home.
I am missing Kenya and sometimes wish i was still there, but im in touch with them still. so Habari sana.

Had a great time in London met up with Anna and ravi then i had my meeting on Thursday with EEPs which i felt was very supportive and approachable i hope that will continue.

Now im getting finalised services of kenya to go round my circuit and talks first one is wednesday morning of this week quite nervous but excited at the same time as i shaer the experience with them.

swimming went fantastic!!!
since then ive been busy job hunting and trying to sort date of services out for kenyan talks.
Also trying hard to adapt back into a routine of some kind yep if im honest im finding it hard dont know why as my family and friends Church so supportive and trying their best.Somedays it feels like ive never been away other days its what ive missed out on quite wired really. But it is good to be back and yes i still miss everyone out in Kenya who i met and love dearly.
Also it not really the place to say but since ive returned home graham and i have separated last week for those who dont already know and still read this. so yeah im gutted and upset over that, but what i learntout in kenya is never far away from my heart. im off to london tomorow for my welcome back meeting on thursday with EEPs so i cant wait to share with them bout my experience in meru.

Since ive been back ive visited family, friends, started looking for a job already!! 1 week back and a couple of days in the uk job hunting already - no rest!!
Aswell as trying to sort out photoes and a service outline.
Had my haircut back to short but im impressed on the length at the top yeah its grown
I miss kenya the children and everyone i met but still im in touch with them all which is great.

At present im now in Nairobi in the city centre, it is a nightmare to get round when u dont know the city - bit like anywhere!
Yesterday i traveled down with Fridah Mubichi thanks hun we eventually found my friend Harriet who is putting me up again thanks.

I cant beleive that ive only 2 whole days here left in Kenya I hope u have enjoyed reading, ill write again when i get home on saturday. Keep looking ill also put photoes onto the blogs once downloaded.

Last night i had chappati and greengrams cabbage and pineapples for supper and of course a cuppa it was nice. then an early night.
This morning up at 7am chilled and updated report which i will send today tehn came into to nairboi an hour later here i am the traffic is so bad.
Just wanted to say ASANTE SANA and farewell to those here in kenya who i didnt get round to saying it too

The day i left the home was monday evening teh kids were arriving from school so i said goodbye to those who were home, I also went to a funeral of our administrators brother my last day in Meru. just like the 1st week funeral.
Now im relaxing adn getting sorted for the plane!! hoping i wont hve to repack at the airport!!

i cant believe my time in kenya is coming to an end so quickly although it is just the beginning as im gonna stay in touch with all the family at meru childrens home aswell as my friends who have also made me part of their families here.
my last few days well what can i say i went back to St pauls and said thank you to them, had lunch with monica and walk around the olive retreat gardens peaceful and place for reflection. Visited a tea factory wow is was ace how from a leaf to tea the process is long but amazing. then lunch with charles.
Guitar lesson with richard then i met with Rev Elijah the founder of the home for lunch.
thursday at the home as we had burning issues to address to the board.
Friday i spent the morning with MKM foundation in their office helping where i can Then my party at the home with the staff and children yep joanne cried!! the kids sang, we ate, a few speeches from the synod bishop of meru, the administrator Mr Muthee, Rev Elijah, then myself, few presentation gifts where i donated my guitar to the home - thanks dave!! Also saying farewell to the social worker Isabella as she has also left the home for another job in mombassa.
saturday i went back to the olive retreat gardens for some reflection time for a couple of hours just peaceful and relaxing and so needed. Today i had my last service in kenya at Kaaga Methodist Church 2nd time back after Easter where i played the guitar whilst fridah and lisa sang then they prayed for me. then chilling with the children this afternoon until 4pm where i attended my last board meeting with MKM foundation again joanne cried as they gave me a present and cake. Tomorrow exists of a funeral tomorrow morning then starting to dig the toilets at a school in the afternoon to my final meal in meru at a friends with her family to travel to nairobi until saturday when i fly home.

Today was a historic day for Meru Boys School and the residence of Meru as Vice president of Kenya Corlonzo(think that the right spelling not sure) visited his former high school Meru Boys for a prize giving day.
People were standing in the streets around kaaga junction waiting for him to arrive from kaaga primary school to meru boys.
I was one of the people standing waiting he waved and smilled to the crowd. unfortunately the photo i took was just of his hand waving but i promise it was him.

3 weeks to go in Meru

Wow i cant believe ive only 3 weeks in Meru
where has this time gone?
Tonight was my last friday fellowship with the high school children as they go back to school tuesday. I thanked them and wished them well.
Then 1 of them came to my room and we chatted and prayed together which was great!!

Another thing is that the home is going through challenging times again with situations occuring one after the other to do with the children mainly, so some decisions need to be made from the board.
All i can say is that thankfully we have the LORD as our GUIDE.

At present the church circuit is under decision making to whether go back permanently into conference again as they have already agreed for the synod bishop to become the new superintendent as the old one has stepped down again.
So i ask for prayer for the decision to be the right one, for them.

Just thought id show u the distance i am actually away from the Uk ok add an hour journey on top as this is taken from a Place between Meru and Nairobi

Also the traffic in Nairobi bit like our Country but imagine, the motorway in the city thats how people drive although you have people selling and walking down the centre of the road at the same time.

1 comment a friend gave me "how was the Jam?" to my reply it could of been better with blueband (margarine) and maybe strawberry".

Things in this country are slowly settling again which is great.

The home is now calm and now the children are returning for morning tutions on monday. Butthis holiday has been interesting and that everyone well ok nearly everyone has got on well and accepted everyone.
Today we had some visitors from a local Church come and see the children, so we had some worship time with them.

Yesterday (13/4/08) Kibaki named the grand coalition team, ushering a new era of government, 3 months of political uncertainity situation, required statesmanship sacrifices for sake of national peace. Kibaki says "lets put politics aside and get to work in peace and harmony we have overcome political difficulties, empower one another".
PNU (Kibaki) have 17 ministies ODM (Raila) 20 ministries and ODM KENYA have only 3 seats on the cabinet.
This is the largest cabinet since independence including 52 assistanced ministers

Nairobi city is ok but eastlands no transport due to Mungiki.

On tuesday 8th april Raila proposed a team to end the deadlock but PNU insisted ODM was delaying the process

So these are the issues Kenya is facing at present but as far as i know the country is at calm.

BEGINNING OF APRIL

After a great weekend away it was down to some serious but enjoyable staff training at the home for 3 days (i was invited to take part) on 'Children at risk' this helped me to be more aware of the situations in Kenya as well as uk, also to refresh on what i had already learnt in the uk but to bring kenyan ways into it aswell.

Then Fridah and i took ourselves off for the weekend to see Thompson Falls and a hippo pool and to see lake olo prosat and most important as we were (I still am) part of the guiding association we went to Nyeri to see Lord Baden Powell and lady Olave Powell house and grave (see photo) this was a great time in ones life after 20 years of being in the guiding association to go and pay my respects.

Then back to the home - also helped the MKM Foundation to treat 500 mosquitoes nets, worked in the office at the home, we are now getting ready for the high school children to return home for a short break and the primary to finish so 55 children in one place interesting times!!!

For all you who follow this blog journey im sorry its been a while but ive been very busy.
First thing was easter sunday wow ive never ever ever attended a church service with police guarding also that the services was split into 2 - 1 side with the synod bishop and the other with autominous i was so shocked and didnt know what to do or should i say 3 as 6 of us went mutual and had fellowship ourselves on the football pitch here i played the guitar we read the wonderful story of our Lord rising.
then at the end of this month i had a fantastic weekend away in Nairobi traveling down in a shuttle with the secretary of the home to a friends house also collecting my work permit - actually ready for collection - better late than never - we had a great time at her sisters on friday evening even with the power failure, saturday Harriet and i visited the animal orpangage where we saw lions, cheeters, leopard monkeys, ostrich, and a few more animals, we had our photo taken sitting next to the cheeter see photo, then in the evening we made chapatis and listened to her grandchild dedication which was done at my nans church in Bath and looked at photos,i visited her Church on the sunday to a presbyterian St Andrews Nairobi then after met up with the secretary of the home and we travelled back to meru.

HAPPY EASTER TO YOU ALL

As we approach Easter Sunday and the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, I wanted to say Happy Easter in advanced as we already know the out come of this special time in our calendars.
My Good Friday service was from 10 am – 12 pm Choirs from the Kirmeru and English services and individuals took part, it was mixed in English and Kirmeru, it was very well attended.
The Minister who took the sermon was very strong said it in English and Kirmeru and the message of the Cross-was reflected upon. Also I have to admit some of his theology was quite strange but as I’m not a preacher I’m not complaining.
How I feel is that we need to hang on to the Lord all the time even when times are difficult as He is there to help us through it.
After all on Good Friday God sent his only begotten son Jesus to die for us so that we will be forgiven and that we have eternal life of salvation. As we look forward to Celebrating Easter Sunday the day RESURRECTION let us continue to pray and read his word and reflect on what the Lord did for us even after Easter for the rest of our lives.

HISTORY IN KENYA HAIL STONES

For the first time in about 70 years so im told (please those who know correct me if im wrong) Meru had very heavy Hail stones.
The family at the childrens home were wondering what it was, was it snow? how was it formed and why? i tried to answer the questions to basic knowledge as i could.
The photo is of some of the children with mum looking an wondering what it is.
Now its all nearly melted to water. Also the other photo is of the hail itself on the ground.
But what surprized me was that they were all so excited to pick it up, taste it (yuck) throw it to see what happens.

A very sad day today

Today (leo) most of the staff and i attended a member of staff nephew funeral he was only 18 years old and an only child and he was murdered in Nairobi on 11th march.
The funeral took place at their family home here in Meru and was very well attended,i myself even had tears in my eyes as i am close to the staff family although i never met the boy.
Most of the service was in Kermeru or Swahili so i understood a few words but i got the idea of what was going on.
I'm just praying for peace and understanding reassurance for the family that they can rely on the Lord and friends for help and support at this time of grieving.

Palm Sunday at Kaaga Methodist Church

This month I’ve been assisting the administrator, secretary,being the first aider, a guardian, a volunteer all in one, hey a lady of many skills and talents (ha ha).

Palm Sunday / Passion Sunday service was like a normal service the difference I noticed from the UK was that there was no Palm Crosses and no one at our church carried palm leaves which around Kenya this happened, also if I’m honest yes it was OK but I wish they had focused more on the actual time of year instead of 1 line and a Bible passage.
As this is an important week called ‘Holy week’ where we focus on the Lord last few days leading up to good Friday where Jesus Died on the Cross for our sins and the best thing is that He rose again on Easter Sunday.
So i would like to encourage all those who read this to remember what the Lord has done for us and on Easter Sunday celebrate his resurrection.

first few weeks in march

Let me first congratulate the KCPE results of our 3 Form 4 students 1 got a C 1 got a C+ and the other 1 got a B also one of these children has passed his driving test – help the roads of Kenya (only joking)

We have had an altogether intake amount of 23 children in to the home, which makes a total number of 55 children at Meru Children’s Home (when they are all here).

Wow what a month it has been so far it started with board meetings, myself being ‘mum’ by taking the new children to school and going to pay school fees from the home, as well as mid term holidays for the High school pupils. Getting up at 6am to give out medication to the children who are sick great sun rises here and then again in the evenings.

I had an opportunity to visit another local school briefly with the CEO and another member of the MKM board to see how the MKM Foundation can help them we are looking at building toilets and rebuilding a classroom for the school, we had a meeting with the rest of the MKM Board and put forward our proposal as well as a community library based at one of the local school these were confirmed.

During this 1st week of March up to Saturday (8th) I wasn’t feeling to good, so on Saturday I went to the doctors and I was diagnosed again with Malaria but this time it was more than before and it was diagnosed as Malaria Positive (+), I was given some medication and now I’m on the mend. I know a friend named John informed me before I came, to take the stronger anti-malarial tablets but being slightly asthmatic I was given ‘Doxycycline’ which here isn’t recognised as anti – malaria!!! Please take this into consideration if you come to Africa.
So in this case I thank God for keeping me healthy and strong.

This last week wow again a manic week with paper work, meetings, visitors also unfortunately one of members of staff had a death in the family so we had to work around that, the funeral is taking place on Wednesday.
Saturday just gone 2 of the older children and I visited 4 pupils from our home at their School for a parents meeting AGM. Majority of it in English so I understood, but the pupils I saw wow they complained, complained and complained due to what was cooked for them and things they don’t have so I’ve passed on their complaints to the administrator for him to handle.

This last week Ive been in the office, helping fridah catch up with paper work, today i sat at a computer typing from 9:30am - 5:30pm helping out for a board meeting we have tomorrow at the home with the Murphy's (great to see you by the way)

We have also had a busy week admitting children into the home altogether we have admitted 22 children from when i was on holiday in Nairobi until today, they all seem to be settling in and making it their home too.

I also took 11 new children to their new school - some had mixed feelings and were nervous about going. I asked them when they returned some said good, some said sawa (OK) and some said they found it hard.

Also the sad situation has been sorted although who and why i still don't know, but as the Lord forgave us Ive forgiven whoever it was.

Also want to say happy birthday to Sharon, Dave, Sheila and Dad also happy anniversary to Julia and Steve. you all know who you are. Have a great day.

History made in Kenya

The KCPE results came out today and our 3 candidates did fantastically well with a C, C+, and B. This means that they can go on further.
Also that Kibaki and Raila shook hands and agreed on a coalition government. So all the prayers have been answered, but as a country we shall still be praying for peace.

The Home

When i arrived back to the home, i had a sad situation to follow up which is still in progress but wont go into that on here as its being sorted. This has now been sorted although we are still following up who and why.

But GREAT news is that we've had a new intake of children another 15 younger ones and 2 new older children. Which has had mixed reactions among the rest of the family. But they seem to be settling in and adapting which is great news.

recently ive been attending different churches which has been great the only problem is thats it is in Kirmeru majority of the time - so ive brought myself a kirmeru service book, and luckily i have a translater, the singing of songs no problem just the sermon. Why have i because i go with the children and a couple of staff.

Samburu national park

I left Nairobi on Sunday to travel back to Meru to Samburu national park for a safari to arrive to sleeping in tents with monkeys around the campsite, especially at night making u think its raining by dropping flowers on your tent. proof in the morning!!
It was great to see the sun rise and set across the Rift Valley plains, also to hunt for mr Simba (lion) but no no where to been seen the whole time, but the other animals we saw a cheater,elephants,giraffe,ostriches,monkeys,dik diks, gazelles, crocodiles, buffalo's that was only a few, the scenery was lovely
We had a few hours to spare during the day so i went swimming in the lodges pool and then had a camel ride - wow that was a tad scary getting up off the ground but wow once up it was great, although after 45minutes it got a tad uncomfortable -i was wondering how the wise men did it for days who knows!!
The safaris we went on was along the dusty roads and the wind was blowing Joanne had to hold on to her hat and i even wore my sunglasses.

IN NAIROBI

Hi everyone im taking a few days away from the home and im in Nairobi until Sunday then to samburu national park till Tuesday this is my first holiday since i arrived in June i think its about time.
I arrived today left the home at 615am up at 5am (Jo tired) but left meru at around 7am then at 8:30am we stopped for breakfast at the glory hotel in Embu then traveled after 1/2 hour break to here.
Today already ive been to the Conference office and eventually received notification on my work permit i receive in about 4 weeks as the fee has been paid now only taken since 7th June!!!
Then i visited the national museum had lunch and arrived around about 3:30pm at the Methodist Guest house.
Im praying that the Lord will allow me to recharge my batteries and refresh myself for my last few month here.

Animals are the traffic police!!!

The animals are the traffic police because they just cross over when they want to so the traffic slows down!! especially donkeys,sheep, cows, goats then when you go out in the country side you see monkeys (wow i was happy to see my 2 favourite animals in the same day sheep and monkeys), just crossing or by the side of the road, or even walking beside you along the road or in front like the photo shows.

The donkey picture (i asked his permission before taking it) is a way of transport although mainly for items not people. A observation i made the other day and i haven't really noticed before on the donkeys back there is a cross have a look in the UK see if the same. We were told that it represents when Jesus rode into Jerusalem. This is what i like about this place its so open to various of faiths and speak open about it too!!

This last week and the weekend before has been a tourist week really, started with visiting KEMU for the 1st time (Michael Chester eventually made it there!!) had a look round with a child as she was registering for computer classes, Its so nice and peaceful there, then sunday we went to MAUA for a ordination service all in Kirmeru apart from the sermon plus 4 hours long - Im getting used to these sort of services. But the great thing happened when i saw Rev Matano again the last time i saw him was on my eeps training at queens in january 07 and we spoke about kenya and prayed together at queens so that was great to know he is around!!! Monday i went to the Equator with a great friend the thing about the water wow it really works and a fantastic day also stopped at a restaurant in the central provinces and whilst waiting for lunch we had a boat trip round the lake. Wednesday we had visitor from Nairobi she came with 3 computers for the home THANK YOU, so now the 3 older ones are very happy as they can practice what they are learning at KEMU back at the home, so we had fun putting the desks together 8 of us, pretty cool!!! then yesterday (Thursday) i went to one of the children new school to look round before he starts today.

The new administrator Mr Mathe seems to settling in well and he is a very understandable man and hes very keen for the children to learn (he is the educational secretary of Meru, if we just get on with our work and care for the children which we are doing then hes happy.

hello everyone
sorry its been a while since my last update but ive been very busy these last 10 days with a team of 8 from USA making Chicken house, with some of the locals of all ages at Church, this has actually been great fun i learnt new skills from mixing concrete by hand to sawing bamboo for the slabs, also carrying timber and bricks, yes hard work yes the devil (little red legs) has tried many times to get in the way but with the strength and determination from our Lord through us, we managed to work as a team. Its been tiring but fantastic and great to meet new brothers and sisters in Christ.
Also for myself to be invited by them to join them in the evenings after for supper and devotion, very uplifting!!

With all the commotion in some parts of Kenya still due to the general elections i just want to reassure you all again that Meru is safe, its now just in the western parts and Nairobi slums where the trouble is. They are though trying to get back to normal and rebuilding their lives, food and help are heading to some of the effected areas. yes at present we have demonstration as you may all be aware but these should end today so praying for peace all over the country.
The children are back at school, everyone back at work, and places are just going to their normal routines again.
People are flying in from America especially ok with no problems. As a friend has informed me that they are back in Kenya.

On a lighter note the rain has started falling again, and when it does the roads become flooded and the side roads especially are muddy. A bit like English weather it goes form 1 to another e.g. sunshine to rain in the same hour!!!

YOUTH BASH

As promised but a tad late, this really comes before the last post
The youth bash was fantastic the whole youth came together of Kaaga Church and we played games from marbles, cards, chess, musical chairs, dancing, volleyball, and tug of wall as well as eating and cooking themselves.
The aim of the day was for the whole of the youth come together before heading back to school and this was achieved, we had it at Church outside and there must of been about 40-50 youth there all competing for a prize but also having fun.
I was very proud of them they seemed to really enjoy the day.
My achievement was i won in Chess not played for i don't know how long, but i had a great time also playing cards - learning new games and playing volley ball as well as getting to know the youth more, ok names i forget but faces i don't, especially if i don't see them daily.
Hoping to do it again sometime maybe in the next holiday which is in April or a picnic of some kind.

As we start the new year already, everything seems to be getting back to normal, the children are starting school again in their new year classes.
The sun is still shining (opps sorry uk i hope the snow doesnt effect alot of u badly)
ive a suntan and been swimming twice in a week the sunday at freds school with some of the children and today at the sports club in meru with Ravena it was great both in outdoor pools.
Im really getting into swimming again. Good exercise!!
This fortnight i've not really done much we had visitors at the home, we have had meetings about the home, bible study with some of the children,cut up lots of cabbages, peeled potatoes mainly in the kitchen.
We had a great youth event at church which ill write about in another post.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL
I hope you had a good one, myself i met up with Isabella went to her sister house for late lunch, then i came back home and the children myself and auntie and many others went to a Church service in meru town from 8:30pm - 5am no joking, it was fantastic there was alot of praying, worshipping, presentations, testimony's sermon was on @crossing over the river Jordan and knocking down walls of Jericho' in English and Swahili, a cuppa break, then we saw the new year in by wishing everyone happy new year singing, then at 4am there was a chance to be anointed with oil so we all went up this took 30mins with people falling and the atmosphere during the whole service and the presence of the Holy Spirit was amazing!!! I was on high and it reminded me abit of spring harvest or even Easter people with the whole openness of everything. Then we walked back home a crowd of us together saw the sun rise went to bed at 6:30am-10:30am then the rest of the day everyone was tired so we all relaxed, washed clothes, cleaned, and some had a bit of energy to go visiting.
Plus again the sun was shining. So that was my new years eve / day and thanks alot to those who i spoke with / txt me to wish happy new year. God bless you all

BE REASSURED MERU WE ARE SAFE

Happy new year to you all.
First of all i want to let you know that Kibaki is president and as you are aware it hasn't gone down lightly but i want to REASSURE you all that here in Meru we are SAFE WITH NO PROBLEMS OF VIOLENCE the only problem we are facing is lack of petrol life is going on as normal, also that as you may already of seen its in parts of Nairobi manly the slum areas and mombassa also on the western side but us on the east ARE SAFE please continue to pray for peace amongst this nation and hopefully the two parties will come together and talk. Also in the papers today Ralia is trying to do another election in 3 months time if a recount isnt done.
ODM party was meant to hold a demonstration today but they are instead doing it on tuesday, but yes there was protests. So please be assured, if the situation changes then i will keep you all informed and yes i feel safe.

Elections in kenya

After 2 months of campaigns for the elections of presidence, parliment and councillors its happened on the 27th
the day went calmly specially in meru i went along to soak the atmosphere although i wasnt allowed in to the room i asked what happens
here they go in to the room letter starting on their ID card show and handover their voting card and ID card given 3 different papers make a mark in the box (in alist) these ballot papers were shipped from the UK. then put in a box, then handed over their ID card aswell as their fingers being dipped into ink so that they cant go again and vote. nor can it be easily washed off.
Although 3 days later we are still awaiting the results ill let u know the president when we know.

CHRISTMAS day

So Christmas in kenya well i was awoken by 1 of the children at 6:30am waited tilli opened my stocking and personal christmas presents,breakfast samosos then i took their presents and placed them under the tree, they came took them and some put them back saying thanks but we dont want (cultural shock jo a tad upset) but experience i said fine choice was theres, then went to church for an hour just like a normal service, the tree was up in church from the carol service differences between here and uk (no nativity scene)the sermon was on mary joseph and bethlehem birth of jesus good service please dont get me wrong. Oh forgot to say THE SUN WAS SHINING!!!
Then home sat round some children went out back fo r lunch traditional food goat veg chapatti mashed potato, sat altogether (children) then the difference again most of the children went out so i sat round chatting then went for a walk to kaaga, i had planned games for them to play (this they knew) but no-one round no problem.
Boxing day i went round fridah and ravena house in the afternoon this was great, chilling chatting playing with munchi and spikey.
Christmas here so im told isnt really celebrated the way we celebrate hardly any gift giving or places decorated. again a difference, but it was calm and a good experience 1 ill treasure in my heart.
Ok yep a wee bit homesick especially 2 days after when it went quiet and back to normal.

WOW Christmas eve already where this year gone - and yep ive finished wrapping presents and just need to sort out parcel parcel game for tomoz, but i thought id take some time out and come cyber and try get in to the spirit of Christmas shame they don't celebrate it as we do, everyone into the general elections more than Christmas not even carols playing oh well not complaining cause the sun is shining and its a great experience so tomorrow morning will be a Christmas to remember we have church at 9am-1030am (6-730uk)
then back to the home and enjoy this is the children's Christmas at the home in 2 years so it will be great also for them to receive presents.
unfortunately no mince pies or glass of sherry / milk or carrot for Santa and Rudolf sorry broke the family tradition this year.

16th december 07 talent show

The talent show was fantastic we have so much youth talent within Meru within the different churches, ranging from singing - dancing - acting - rapping to playing the keyboard. From the youngest to the eldest. Ok Joanne was the photographer shame!!
The photo was actually taken in the morning service but when i down load the photos i will place some on.
But i was very impressed especially the acting from the children from the home as 1 of the lads was very brave and changed in to a top and skirt part way through - what amazed me though hes quite quiet off stage put him on the stage then a different person.

changes at the home

Just to inform you all, the changes at the home have happened and that the administrator has left resigned and handed over the keys. So so far the social worker Kim has taken over until the new board decides, also the home is now independent and is under Kaaga Church circuit which is also independent and no longer under the conference / synod.
But all is well and everyone i think are now calm again. This month has been full of eventful experiences. All have coped and have bonded together in support and as a family.
So we look forward to see what 2008 brings.
Ive become more confident and i hope strong through these experiences and the Lord has definitely been with us through this time of struggle.
yes to be honest during this month of trial i have felt what do i do, do i stay or do i go but recently through chats with friends and family here and UK they have encouraged me to stay on, its been a tad difficult expressing how Ive been feeling so thank you for all those who have helped. But as i said its been worth it and has made our relationships within the home stronger.
SO Joanne has been a tad quiet (shocked i hear some of u say joanne quiet no chance) but stood by those who need it most.
Im still enjoying it though and i cant wait to see u all again.

I would also like to add that the youth carol service last night went fantastic considering part way through we had a power cut so they experienced carols by candlelight although we only sang 'we 3 kings', 'silent night' and 'we wish u a merry Christmas' carols with dances (before the power cut)drama and songs also a sermon it went brilliant which i was worried about due to the so-called practices during the week, it took off great!!

Wow it must be nearly christmas because the children myself and the house mother helped them to put the christmas tree up in the dining hall it looks great.
Tommorrow the children are hosting a talent show in the afternoon at Kanisa which will be great they have been practicing very hard for their part they have invited everyone especially the youth to come along and take part.
Im looking forward to celebrate christmas hapa yes ill miss you all.
Thank you for the cards and gifts everyone has sent ive been good and not yet opened it mum not even the stocking!!!

long time so catch up time

well since i last wrote im feeling loads better bit of energy back, just been busy busy busy this month i dont know where its gone but i know its been hectic with various of situations at the home, especially the past 2 days when there has been upsets with staff and administrator but soon will get sorted.
The youth events are going great we learning new songs for carol service and dance also to sing each sunday.
The foundation going great again busy with christmas and sorting out projects for the new year.
The community work is also been busy with the collection of the goats and food parcels to the grandparents it was worth just seeing their faces.
The children are now looking forward to Christmas we are gonna try and start making decorations next week. Yes they are staying home.!!!
Kanisa going strong hence the sacking of the superintendent last month we use songs of fellowship and the church has over 50% youth there when everyone home.
I cant believe its nearly Christmas 11 days to the day 10 to Christmas eve. It doesn't feel like December as its not cold etc its hot even when it rains.!!
Plus at the end of my 7th month hapa where is time going. Also the elections are happening this month 27th December so politics all over the place not just at the home.

jambo everyone
well im now starting my 7th month hapa already and the sun is shining in December (very unusual for me as i try to adapt to this weather rather than the snow !!
My health is lot better thanks. Feeling loads better which is great - so better a friend Ravena and i went swimming yesterday to an outdoor pool it was great!!
Everything going on as usual the children are home from school waiting results and looking forward to what christmas brings and the new year.
Planning of things to happen e.g. a youth party, carol service. and other events
Both projects are doing well, coming to the time of year when we need to sort what we have and what we don't have.
The home is just carrying on with the usual situations no change but as i've said please keep praying as we see what the new year brings. I can feel you all in when i know.
So im over half way and i these past 6 months most of u know so no need to say part from im happy with the home, the social worker fieldwork projects and the foundation im occasionally helping with.

Some health news yes i was keeping it to myself but as i write this i have to admit even taking antimalarial tablets i have managed to get bit of malaria and bacteria infection so im resting got diagnosed Wednesday so my 1st trip to the doctors for myself i felt ok with it and the doctor understood what i was trying to explain my symptoms, o yep im on more tablets only for another 5 days.
But im sawa and its only a small portion so please dont worry
but good news ive made it to 6months with out being ill considering so kenya is best place to be for my hair and weight which have also grown.

This was a great day out with Ravena and Kate - a girls day out
in some places we had to be quiet which is quite hard for the 3 of u.
We managed to get up close to most of the animals especially the elephants and giraffes wow there were so many, we saw dikdiks, hippos, gazelles (antelopes), buffaloes, zebras and a few more. We also had time to look round the accommodation and eat. We also hired our own guide to take us round firstly we stopped for every bird lizard possible then the big animals. It was a great day and the sun shone. Great first ever safari taken some photos to share with you all

Hi everyone
I hope you are all enjoying this blog and feel in touch with what is happening here
Well what can i say after friday i went to ccm saturday and did biblestudy on the lost coin and had pictures and wordsearch for them to colour, after i / we donated a football to the home football team as they have none to practice with.
Then as i was walking home with a friend we had some shocking sad news and we were in shock for the rest of the time, the shocking news was that our Superintendent at Kaaga Methodist Church was sacked due to couple of reasons, (very pety reasons i thought), so as you can imagine the sunday service was very emotional for all as it was his last. I found him and his wife very uplifting, very approachable, and encouraging aswell as very supportive. Be missed by all, so we are trying to get him reinstated we all met to put our thoughts across in our various groups some more heated than others. Sorry for those who have found out via this but i thought u all should know.

On a lighter note please can u all pray for the class 8 children as they sit their final primary school exams starting today and wait for the results before they decide their next step is. Also for the return of the form 4s back to their homes awaiting results. at the home we have altogether 7 canidates.

wow ni (what) can mimi (i) say bout this week just gone in brief
Monday - i had a fab day in Maua (the views on the journey was great photoes taken) its bout 1 hour away, went with a friend, once i got there we off loaded some sand had a cuppa and chapatti then i went to Maua hospital for at least 30minutes meeting Barbara, Rev alice the chaplin, had a great chat and a quick look round the hospital. (It is where Heather Chester worked) few photoes again taken. The villiage had lots of building work going on rubbish all over the ground. It was a great experience.
Tuesday - went to ccm to meet up with the fellowship group of guardians. Then we managed to open an account for community care scheme to help with the projects / social work.
Wednesday - catching up with fieldwork paperwork in the office helping the social worker isabella.
Thursday - field work the otherside of town to a lady to see her new goat pen (been built since the training), met a lad on vocational training etc. I am really enjoying the social work side its an eye opener to see how people live, and are so happy with the progress.
Today friday - took kate into meru town looked around and then a trip into meru town library which was great to see how they run and the set up.
so its been an exciting week aswell as the usual cleaning, homework helping, and bible study in the evenings at the home, with the children.

But in the distance of the photo you can see a waterfall, went no where near it. Trust me its safer - true all you need to do is ask graham!! But to stand away from it and stay there for a few moments it was great. I found it walking back from the synod service and asked the child i was with to take a photo.

just a quick update for you all
wow ive now entered my 6th month hapa where has the last 6 months gone - very busy exciting also new adventures.
i am planning to venture out a tad more like visit other places in the next 6 months, also help out with community projects. As some of you are aware i am doing a lot more field work with the social worker with various of projects and we now have an umbrella name for the scheme its called community care scheme at least now we can start putting donations into the bank.!! also starting to help out more with the Kanana Mubichi foundation(more details to follow) aswell as helping at the home. I am doing this because i feel that the Lord has now called me since ive been here to reach more into the community than i have been doing as well as encouraging the children at the home.
These are important times as the children are sitting final examinations to decided their future we have 7 children 3 in form 4 finished schooling 4 in class 8 choosing high schools.
The youth choir at church has unfortuantely declined in numbers and doesnt meet that often anymore but occassionally meet sunday mornings before service to practice this is due to schooling and other committments /shyness. so please pray that this will again grow.

Elections preparations for dec/ Kenyatta day 20th october

Kenyatta day 20/10/07

This is a very special day for Kenyans as they remember, the founder fighters who fought for the country to claim their countries’ independence, 43 years ago.
I saw some of the events on TV where several organisations ranging from army groups to service brigades, from brownies to scouts marching around the stadium in Nairobi, then the areoplanes display something like what the red arrows do, next they had some singers and then the speeches from the President and others.

RUNNING FOR PRESIDENCY (October – December)

At present what’s in the newspapers / on the news is mainly all about Politics as in December Kenyans will be voting for a party to take over presidency.
There are 3 major parties fighting it out these are: ODM, ODM Kenya and KIBAKI (the current 1) yes there are smaller groups trying but it’s really these 3 main ones who seem to be in the public eyes. So you can imagine what most of the conversations are based on around here – I’m so glad its in the paper and on the 9pm news which is in English as I don’t really understand Kimiru although I’m picking up a few Kiswahili words and coming to an understanding just about of some kimiru words or at least get the drift of what they are saying.

The 2 projects I’m involved with as well as at the home are going sawa.
Its exciting times that everything is now coming together and getting sorted.
One of the projects was at a fellowship meeting at CCM on Tuesday which I helped
Isabella (social worker from the home), to coordinated a training on how to keep goats for 20 people at CCM primary school, I was so impressed with myself considering it was all in kirmiru I actually understood what was being said and even wrote a bit down changing it into English and got it correct!! I’m shocked too!! (Actual speaking of kirmiru, I know a couple of words, but I’m studying Kiswahili and now speaking it a bit more. But as you are all aware, writing no problem but speaking its hard).

So here’s abit of what happened at the training, it went on for 2 hours we learnt a lot from the trainers who came in, from the different breeds, to building the pen to the common diseases to record keeping.

GOAT BREEDS AND BREEDING PROGRAMME

Dairy goats = Toggenbury = Meat (British)
Saanen = Milk
Germany Alpine = Milk
Galla Boroch (F1) = Both

Make a record of amount of milk each day

(F1 = first generation)

Toggenbury male mates Kimiru female
Kidding within 147 – 150 days
Offspring = F1 (50% toggen 50% local)
Males – casemated at 3 months
Females – mated at the age of 1 year.

Also when to notice the goat signs when it is unwell to when it is on the heat!!!
I was really shocked to find out actually how much work is involved in keeping goats.
The fellowship group was really interested in this as it could become an income generated project for their families.

Now it’s just a case of fundraising for these goats,

Muga everyone im writing this on my day off in my room Friday 2nd November just waiting now until another trip to the ‘White Star hotel’ for lunch (they must think im mad as im getting a local but its great food and reasonably priced plus very friendly) meeting with some of the Foundation before they go and meet another board.

The white star and Terahs have been my 2 locals with meeting friends and off day, although please don’t worry not there all the time – but a girl does need to let her hair down some of the time and get into the community!!

So to the answer to some of your questions yes im being looked after and im eating there are signs of this too!!!
The sun is shining although this is meant to be the rainy season and at present it only seems to rain in the early hours or late at night – no complaints!!

This week has been busy in the office at the home trying to sort out the budget for the year and filing, catching up with accounts, as they needed to be done also
Meeting up with the 2 Projects 1) the above foundation, 2) with Isabella (social worker) on fieldwork / training and whom to link up with within the community also to see more of Meru.

(NB Part of EEP training is hapa (here) at Meru children Home and within the community – which becoming involved with the two above im fulfilling this I hope!!
wow eventually the internet is back up and running well i had the smallest beef sandwich toastie i've ever had so shame i had to eat chips with it although it was nice.

Now ive reached the end of 5th month entering my 6th month wow where has 1/2 year gone.
Also im now 3 hours ahead of u (uk people) so as i write this your sunday sevices may be starting mine has finished.
Leo went to another Kanisa for the english service led by a lady from america but has been here in meru for ages. It was great service we were introduced and we had tosing a song which was new to them but for us especially is my mum favourite song "I the lord of sea and sky" if i remember its also Rev Gareth Higgs too hope im right. Also we were taught about Jeremiah going out are we ready to do this? Are we truly disciples of God I am so sure of that question. Those who know me should be aswell i hope.
So the last post was about my feelings from the 5th month well there are still true but i have perked back up again.
So the rainy season has started outcome the wellies!! although not today the sun is shining!!
Ive met up again with Fridah (whom i help with the youth with hapa), Kate and Jean(from usa) having a great time with them - maybe a trip to usa u never know!!
So i have done my normal routine!! Although i did abit of haggling at a shop over a pair of wellies (mud boots) and it worked!!

At present im still waiting for work permit to get to me its only taken 5 months to sort so far, although my visa is covered, and im only a volunteer but to work help out more than 1 day at a school i need the permit but im so busy, helping he projects im starting to help with which is great also at the home.
Please keep praying for the children especially as they come to the end of their school years especially form 4 when the next step is College/uni also the class 8 as they have exams nov 12th and the working out of which high school they go to in jan.
Also in december we have general elections happening so at present there are campaigns around Kenya.

5th month feelings

My 5th month feelings already 14 days in started off, fantastic spending time with Ruth & David from the UK and their friends hapa (here) in Meru, but since the weekend (13/14), ive come down with a cold and hardly any voice, so unfortunately my normal Saturdays at CCM sharing the gospel with them didn’t happen, as all I wanted to do was curl up, sleep, regain my energy and rest my throat.
I was even saying hapana (no) to Kanisa (Church) (14/10/07) today, which isn’t like me! But im so glad to say, I went, it was very encouraging to hear the story of Isaiah and his calling from the Lord “Whom shall I send as a messenger to my people? Who will go for us” and the reply Isaiah gave “Lord I’ll go send me”. This and the song we sang ‘Trust and obey’ was so touching as this reminded me of my calling to join EEPs and to come to Meru. I was also encouraged by 1 of the children here singing; ‘there’s a hero’ a very uplifting song and the words are so true, when you feel down look for the hero inside of you. Also keep trusting and obeying the Lord, as He is great and awesome, always there with you pushing you along.
Although im still enjoying it hapa (here), and so excited to the next 7 months to see what God has planned, all the challenges, experiences, places to visit, whom shall I meet etc. I Have to admit there are times when I feel lonely, sad, even wondering why im hapa? but I stop and think of my calling, the challenges; experiences to get this far were well worth it. I thank God and all of you for this great opportunity to come to Meru Kenya to learn from them and help to encourage; support them in their everyday life through working voluntarily wherever needed, with the family, within the community; the Church; sharing my faith and sharing the gospel.
This feeling even writing this has boosted me up to carry on doing what God has sent me to do.
I thank God also for the new friends and family I am now part of, and whom I have already met, for their support and encouragement in various of ways, to make this time feel like home.

It has been great seeing David and Ruth P. from my district back in UK; I thank them for being able to come and see, and to spend some hours here at the home with the children, which they really enjoyed singing altogether. As well as inviting me to spend time with them and with their hosts outside of the home (during their personal holiday time.)
On Tuesday 9/10/07 We had a great experience to see ‘Mount Kenya’ at a distance on the way to ‘Nanyuki’ also to wander round the town.
As well as visiting ‘Mount Kenya Safari Club’, enjoying the scenery and the grounds very beautiful. Even in the drizzle!!!
Really enjoyed everything I did with them and my asantesana go to them and their hosts, for the opportunities to share in the experiences of a different place in Kenya and for their fantastic warmth of welcoming, fellowship and friendship.

I had the opportunity to go and watch a polo match in Meru; there were 2 teams with 4 on each side, the horses looked so tired afterwards.
This was great; I’ve never seen a match live. Wow talk bout complicated rules apparently as 1-team scores, back to the centre but then you are shooting the other way. Need a good memory of which way to shoot!! Ill be no good at it.
Also I found out where the English folk are hiding!! It was full of them, felt for my friend Fridah (from Meru) as she said, “it was her time to feel out of place” but she goes regularly. At first it was wired even for Kate (from USA) and I seeing white people again but got used to it after a while, also talking about London, Bristol and most important how well we did in the rugby.

History of the home
Home was opened on 14th November 1999. Mainly built by a small American charity, Kenyan Children Foundation and a donation from Karibuni Trust (UK)
It is a home, the children are treated as a family, and the children are off the streets that have been picked up by the social workers to come here to live.

There are 32 children at the home, and 16 staff 2 housemothers, an aunty, 2 cooks, 3 cowmen, 2 watchmen, housefather/driver, and housefather/Posho mill, the administrator, secretary and 2 Social workers.

The boys and the girls have different houses, apart from room 2 the younger 5 children this is mixed. The children are mostly off the streets or orphans.

It is run by donations from several of sources, although the Farm and Posho mill is income generating.

Dedication of some books to St Peters School Meru

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to go with a couple of friends, to this school with some books, promoting reading and sharing with the school children as well as with the Staff.
St Peters is in the rural parts of Meru, as we were travelling along the dusty sandy roads for about 20minutes from Kaaga, I noticed a difference from Kaaga, the houses were different, and the people living there in the community, had to go and fetch water from a pit, the only water supply in the village, plus no electricity although we did see a few new wires overhead – which according to Fridah weren’t there the last time she visited.
When we approached, the children were outside waiting with eager, especially when they saw Kate and I two white people they kept coming up to us asking our names, and where we were from, also amazed that I was from the UK and Kate from America.
Our project for the day was to promote, sharing and making reading fun. We assigned ourselves to whichever age group we wanted, – I took class 3 (5-6 yrs) I read them 2 stories 1 was an action one which meant them moving from their desks, they laughed and we had fun. Then we sang few songs in English and Kiswahili. Allowed me to tape so i can play it to all of you, also few photos to share.
Then we came together and the dedication of the books to the school took place, their smiles and gratutide was awesome to see and quite touching. We class it as something small and take for granted, but not hapa(here).

After lunch we were shown where they made porridge by hand, both kate and I had a go – hard work using a wooden slab to push the porridge slowly, and not lumpy without spilling – opps i spilt alittle but after that kept trying.
I think I’ll keep it to the machine hapa (here) at the home – talk about back ache.!!
Good laugh we were the centre of laughter staff aswell as the team, which we came along with.

September 20th

Leo (today) Mimi (I) had a great day, hard work but it was fun. Worked on the Farm at the home with 1 of the uncles. Busy trying to fix water pipes so the cows could drink then I fed the cows – oh by the way there’s 11 cows at the farm (no other animals.) – back to my day then tea break then after we took them to the field so they could graze, wow they are stubborn but at least they obey!! Watching them push 1 another out of the way, so that they could eat was funny; also keeping them all 1 place was a challenge but, manageable also to get them to stop eating sugar cane and especially the onions which were drying out. Wish Wewe (you) could of seen them.
Whilst they were grazing we ate lunch as well as keeping an eye on them, then at 3pm took them back and got them prepared ready for milking.
I managed to milk by hand 3 of the cows Clover, Beauty, Boxer they behaved although clover did do a few stamps and tail throwing but Mimi wasn’t hurt and carried on milking by hand. Hard work but I had a go. Then once that was over we fed them and swept up. It was fun!!! See photo.

Mimi (I) had the opportunity to visit another Kanisa (Church) Called St Paul’s Methodist where the whole churches of the synod of Meru gathered together for a Synod Fundraising event/ service.
We arrived at 11:15am and we left early at 2:30pm sawa (ok) I have to admit sinydo (yes) it was interesting to see what happens and also to visit another Church in Meru. But after 3 hours of sitting listening it was a tad boring not just for me, no offence, Couple of Choirs sang, we Prayed, collection, The preachers / ministers paid their contribution as well as being named. Sermon. That was it really. Yes some of it went over my head, as it was not in English some kimeru some Kiswahili but some words, I actually understood, also Fridah translated for me. Also as we walked out I only then noticed I was the only white person there – doesn’t bother me, to me we were worshiping the same God and all there for the same reason of support.
I did manage to get a nice suntan sitting listening!!

Kaaga hearing impaired School sept 13

September 13th

Leo was great, I managed to go down to Kaaga hearing impaired school, to help in the library – I really enjoyed it!! I managed to use my British sign language skills, and they understood!! I also managed to pick up some of their signs. The great thing was they taught me a few signs as well. Hapa (here) they use mainly Kimeru /American but looking in the sign language book some of the signs are the same as British – I have leant the alphabet and other signs for “name” and “sign”. So i'm so glad I managed to use my signing whilst I’ve been hapa. Hoping to visit again.
So watch out BSL + KSL = JSL !! dont understand have to ask Glenys (stoke uk)

Hospital trip september 11th

Leo (today) Mimi (I) had the opportunity to experience the hospital with a child it was like the UK with the waiting although quicker, but instead there was no waiting room. We got told to go to a particular room, then we sat on benches in the corridors with everyone else in rows, then you see the doctor in order of where you sit. It was a good experience.

During this holiday Siobhan and i have managed to take some of the children swimming went twice at a pool which walking takes 45minutes so walked off the lunch and ready to swim - i can stand up in the deep end!! (up to my shoulders)which was so worth it it cooled us down until the walk back again, but hoping to go again sometime now i know where it is and its 50ksh (40p)all day for watoto (children) and 100ksh (80p) adults.
But getting the children to go oh my headache at first yes then no then they didnt want to go with the others so in the end we took each house separately apart from the girls as none wanted to.

Since the youth rally we did a youth service at church which the theme was "the youth are the backbone of the church.". which is true we are all youth no matter how old from the youngest to the eldest.

We also had a farewell party for siobhan and wished her all the best at the place where she was staying.

Also UK family news Happy 1st birthday to both my nephews Joshua (4th) and Thomas (8th)

youth rally

So where has this month gone, 3rd month wow this 1 been busy with wengi of events happening and the watoto (children) off school in the afternoons, they start back on the 4 / 6th sept. Then they break up again mid november - jan 4/6 longest break.
This last week i had the opportunity to go with the youth to their rally at another church in Kaaga circuit which off the top of my head i cant remember sorry it was great there was 8 youth groups taking part and we didnt do that bad 2/3/4 positions in what we took part in. they did songs, folk song, folk dance, drama and some worship.

off to church meeting to go through a drama i hope with the youth for sunday.

I had the opportunity to go to women fellowship rally at Kaaga Church it was a competition of 18 groups within Meru whom took part.
They all each in turn had to memorise Bible verse 1 Corinthians 9:17-27; sang the song “Oh thy hand has guided”; then it was up to them what they composed then at 2:30 it was lunchtime, after lunch they all did the traditional dance their own way.
It was really interesting to watch although a long day started at 10:30 finished about 7pm.

Since my last up date wow weve been busy and that was only 3days ago well already in august and what a first few days its been. Met siobhan getting on great and been through some stuff already together, all i ask is that please pray for the changes and for peace happening here.
The children and a few staff had their teeth checked yes me too so graham jenny and my family / support group i have now been the dentist and teeth are good no problems, no decay no nothing!!+ it was free of charge the photo hopefully with this is the proof ok photo will come later
Also happy birthday to Jude, andrea, Tash any anyone else celebrating anything also happy anniversary dad and Ger on the 8th hope everyone enjoys have a drink on me.
